The House Labor-HHS-Appropriations subcommittee introduced its funding bill for fiscal year 2024, which includes the Department of Education’s (ED) budget. The bill includes proposed cuts severely affecting students, educators and our educational system. Currently, the bill calls for a $22.5 billion cut to education funding, which is 28% below FY 2023 funding. This is the lowest funding amount allocated to ED since 2006 and will have devastating impacts throughout America’s education system if enacted.
To put this into perspective, Title I funding would be cut $14.7 B (80%), an estimated reduction of more than 220,000 teaching positions. It is estimated that North Carolina could lose over 6,400 teaching positions. Title II, a source for professional development funding, would be completely eliminated.
Educators utilize these programs to carry out the work of educating students across the nation. Such drastic reductions to federal funding would negatively impact music education classrooms and compound the current workloads for our educators.
